It’s true to say that the best guitars are built from the inside out, and Vintage enjoys a well-earned reputation for building great guitars.

Vintage guitars – the best just got even better. VINTAGE : Vintage VS6GO – Playmusic Pickup Magazine Music journalists love creating new genres and the acronym NWOBHM has a particularly strong resonance with British rock fans of a certain age. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal was a term coined by Sounds magazine during the early 1980s as an attempt to capture the essence of an exciting new resurgence in British hard rock and metal spearheaded by the likes of Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and, of course, Saxon. Few bands captured the gritty denim n’ leather spirit of NWOBHM like Saxon, the Yorkshire based quintet’s rousing biker anthems celebrated the tribal mentality of hard core metal fans and Wheels of Steel is still the band’s signature track, it’s powerhouse riff composed by guitarist Graham Oliver on a white mid 70s Gibson SG. Oliver recently collaborated with the Vintage guitar brand on developing a new replica of his beloved workhorse and the finished article now takes pride of place among the Vintage Reissued series. Body & Neck The V6GO features the familiar double cutaway solid mahogany body with smoothly beveled edges and a very convincing looking aged cream finish. If you haven’t played this style of double cutaway guitar before it’s thin ultra-light body feels enormously comfortable, the player can really tuck it in tight against their torso at an angle that places the neck in the ideal playing position. The original Gibson SG underwent several changes during its first decade and by the mid 1970s (the approximate period when Graham’s original SG was built) the SG featured an extended neck heel that was deemed necessary to help bolster up this particularly vulnerable area, a feature that the V6GO duly duplicates. The extra strength notwithstanding, the added bulk means that access to the upper reaches of the V6GO’s neck does feel slightly impeded compared to the virtually non-existent neck heel more commonly encountered on the SG. Still, after playing it for a while you can appreciate that this chunky heel’s elongated surface also makes a comfortable thumb rest during excursions to the upper reaches of the 22- fret rosewood fingerboard. Thus guitar feels like it is strung fairly heavy but playability generally isn’t an issue, the mahogany neck feels fractionally slimmer than Gibson’s modern ’59 pattern neck profile and so it offers a solid and comfortably rounded shape that fits the player’s hand like a glove. The finishing is also very good, the fret-ends are uniformly smooth and the top nut slots are cut properly to facilitate smooth return to tuning when the cool-looking retro-style Vibrola tailpiece is bought into play. Hardware The V6GO is a very attractive looking guitar that drips with period correct detail. A distinctive asymmetrical ‘batwing’ black pickguard contrasts with the guitar’s aged cream finish whilst the large chrome plated Vibrolastyle tailpiece makes for an impressively elegant looking centerpiece. Compared to a Strat-style vibrato bridge the Vibrola tailpiece is a primitive design that simply anchors the strings on a leaf spring made from a piece of bent steel whose vibrato action is manipulated by the bolt-on whammy bar. This Vibrola has a firm but nicely balanced setup, it feels taut and springy with no sensation of Bigsby-esque vagueness or sloppiness in the action and so long as the strings are stretched in the Vibrola returns to accurate pitch even after a fairly hefty shake. OK, we’re obviously not talking Floyd Rose but you’d still be amazed at how much range the Vibrola has, so long as you take care not to go too overboard with the dive-bombing. Wilkinson hardware is synonymous with the Vintage brand and Trevor Wilkinson has clearly relished the opportunity to bring his expertise to bear in helping to help Graham Oliver develop his signature Vintage axe. The specially developed pickups aren’t found in the standard Wilkinson catalogue and comprise a pair of passive humbuckers – a chrome covered WHHBC in the neck and a high output WBHB model with bladed magnets taking care of business at the bridge. Sounds Sharp-eyed readers may have also sussed that the neck pickup is apparently mounted back to front. According to Graham Oliver, he similarly modified his own SG after reading that Peter Green’s Gibson Les Paul featured a similar setup. The crucial difference is whereas Peter Green’s pickups were incorrectly wired out of phase the V6GO’s conventional wiring means that both pickups are wired in phase, guaranteeing that the V6GO’s powerful tones will always burst forth unimpeded! The bladed bridge humbucker is a faithful interpretation of the Bill Lawrence unit retrofitted to Graham’s original SG. Whereas the neck pickup has a softer, sweeter sound more in keeping with a vintage PAF, its counterpart at the bridge is far more aggressive. Think later period Black Sabbath rather than AC/DC and you are in the right ballpark, tone-wise: the bladed humbucker sounds fairly geared towards delivering plenty of midrange poke, which is ideal for soloing whilst the low end is surprisingly tight. The powerful treble response brightens everything up and helps guard against everything starting to sound too cloudy; this pickup has a fairly dark tone but it can still packs an impressive punch. Pinched harmonics are a piece of cake and endless sustain is no problem once you’ve got your amplifier dialed-in with the necessary amount of hi-gain overdrive. This pickup was born in an era when master volume amps were just coming in and rock guitarists were still looking for ways to squeeze extra oomph from their amps. High output humbucking pickups were very fashionable during the mid 70s and the V6GO evokes that classic rock vibe very convincingly; listen to any of Saxon’s classic LP’s like Wheels of Steel or Strong Arm of the Law and you’ll immediately hear that raw stridently singing tone being used to full effect. SHOULD I BUY ONE? Like many signature guitars the V6GO is very much a product of the player who inspired it. Graham Oliver’s fondness for late 70s Gibson guitars was somewhat unconventional even by the standard of the time but he found that they worked for him. Graham obviously loves his old SG to bits and has demanded – not unreasonably – that his Vintage replica is accurate in every important detail save for the name on the headstock. The V6GO may be equally uncompromising but that is a major part of its charm. It looks and sounds unique whilst evoking all of the excitement and energy of the NWOBHM explosion. Rock on! |
